i-to-i : Case Study
Phillippa Hendry , Lion Park & Pengiun Sanctuary, South Africa
When I did not get the grades I needed to study English, I decided to defer, work, travel and volunteer, before going to study History of Art the following year. I chose to travel to South Africa because my mother had recommended it, and I chose the i-to-i project at the Lion Park and the Penguin Sanctuary because they are such unusual and exotic animals.
While at the Lion Park, my main duties were working in the nursery with newborn cubs (mostly lions, but also one hyena). I bottle-fed the cubs, prepared their milk formula, washed their bedding and cleaned the nursery. I also worked with the customers who were allowed into some of the enclosures, and on 'giraffe duty' which involved keeping the two tame giraffes out of the car park. At my second project at the Penguin Sanctuary, I cleaned the pens, pools and crates the animals slept in. I prepared fish and fed the penguins, I kept feeding charts and occasionally treated wounds.
