Base Camp Group : Case Study
Jonathan – Snowboarding Instructor Course, Canada; Snowboard Instructor Job, Australia
Jonathan is a keen surfer and snowboarder from Cornwall. He passed his CASI Level 2 on the course and headed out to Thredbo, Australia where his Base Camp Instructors (Riack and Juddy) are from. Below is an account of his time out there.
‘As for working out here it was helpful knowing Rickand Juddy (Base Camp Group instructors) as they were able to answer a few questions I had. As for applying I did this online and signed up for a week long hiring clinic whereby the end of it you were offered a job. The qualifications I obtained really helped me get a foot in the door. Luckily I was hired as a full time instructor.

As the season kicked off more work became available. Being a rookie meant that the senior instructors have their choice of work, whilst we regularly take 1st time lessons. However again having the qualifications (CASI 2) has enabled me to take higher end classes, for which I have been lucky. The level and age of snowboarders I take ranges hugely, from teaching a 6yr how to do 180s to helping adults how to ride a chair lift. The experience I have gained and the new skills I have learnt have been helpful and am really looking forward to teaching in the Northern hemisphere.’
Jonathan is going back to Whistler in November to work a full season as an instructor.
